Long-term evaluation of Functional Communication Training

Dr. Dave Wacker

The purpose of this talk is to describe the long term effects of conducting functional communication training in the homes of young (6 years and younger) children with disabilities who display destructive behaviors such as self-injury and aggression. For the past 15 years, our project team (Wendy Berg and Jay Harding) at the University of Iowa has received funding from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development to conduct functional analyses and functional communication training in home settings. Parents conduct all assessment and treatment conditions with one hour of weekly coaching conducted by project staff. Our most recent 5 year project, which began in 2004, evaluates maintenance of treatment effects for up to one year following training. In this talk, I will summarize the results obtained to date, and offer a methodology for evaluating maintenance that is based on the response strength of the adaptive behavior that is reinforced during treatment.
